Once the Penny Post commenced in 1840 postage stamps became a necessary item, small personal stamp boxes to hold one or two stamps with curved bases for their easy removal of stamps became very popular. Other boxes to hold items such as pens, pencils, rulers, wax seal and sealing wax became part of the normal desk set up.
