Black Forest

Luzern and other such picturesque Swiss resorts of the Black Forest were very much in vogue with the wealthy Victorians. This was in part due to Queen Victoria visiting the area in 1868 retracing the steps of her beloved Albert who had spent time travelling there in 1837. The wood carving industry originated in the picturesque town of Brienz in the early 1800's grew to become the  main source of  industry for a whole community.
